This Year’s World’s Best Restaurant

Dorathy Gass

This year’s marks a pretty big accomplishment for the Eleven Madison Park restaurant in New York. It is the second time in 15 years that an establishment outside of Europe has snagged the ‘World Best Restaurant’ award. The last time this was accomplished was in 2004, when French Laundry in California was awarded the honor.

Knocking Osteria Francescana from Italy out of the top spot to second, the achievement also placed El Celler de Can Roca in third place. Rounding out number four and five spots included France’s Mirazur and Lima’s Central, respectively.

A huge acknowledgement for any restaurant, Eleven Madison Park received this nod on April 5th during a ceremony in Melbourne, Australia at the Royal Exhibition Building; a 1880’s domed pavilion that was donned with an Oscar-esque red carpet for attendees to enter in. Last year’s event took place in New York.

CNN reported that Eleven Madison is run by Daniel Humm, Swiss native, who hand-in-hand with the restaurant’s other co-owner, Will Guidara, serves up some European cuisine with a hint of New York flavor. The establishment is located in Manhattan, just off Madison Park.

As Guidara states, the relationship and trust, the dynamic of the restaurant is what brought them to the 2017 World’s Best Restaurant accolade. As he noted, he works with his best friend; when they fall, they do it together – and when they succeed, they also do it together.

Humm noted that the idea was to develop one of the world’s greatest dining rooms, but that it was all possible because they had each other. He also stated there was nothing they can’t do.

Forty-seven of the globe’s top chefs were in attendance for the ceremonies and Heston Blumenthal was honored with the Lifetime Achievement award, while Dominique Ansel, from France, was given the Best Pastry Chef award. Some other awards handed out included: Paris’ Septime received the Sustainable Restaurant award; Virgilio Martinez received The Chef’s award; and Disfrutar in Barcelona captured this year’s “One to Watch” award.

The restaurants that have received these awards and accolades are definite ‘must-visits’ for anyone travelling to the respective areas they reside in!
